I have had seizures since I was 12yo, and was diagnosed with epilepsy when I was 15.  The doctors put me on dilantin, and it worked until after the birth of my first child.  Then my seizures began again.  I was never told that sleep deprivation could trigger seizures, so I didn't know.  The doctors tried several other meds, and finally put me on phenobarbitol.  I had my seizures under control for the next 12 years, and then at the birth of my 5th baby, I developed post partum depression.  The doctor put me on prozac and sent me home.  I started having some mild problems, and just thought it was stress.

One day while driving to the market I had a gran mal behind the steering wheel of my car, on the freeway!  The doctors began fiddling with my medication again trying to figure out what caused my seizures to return.  They did tests, and found a cyst on my brain.  It had not showed up before.  My seizures continued, and they continued to put me on anti depressants, and trying different medications, all the while I was seizing continuously.  My license was taken away, I couldn't function through the day with my 5 kids.  I couldn't clean my house, and I had no energy because of all the medication they had me on.  I was a mess.

A neighbor told me to visit her doctor, who was into "natural remedies" also.  So I went to her, and she immediately took me off the anti depressants, and put me back on phenobarbitol.  Then she began to use herbal remedies, homeopathic remedies on me.  I am very sensitive to any changes, so she has to go very slowly with me.  She told me to get regular messages, visit a chiropractor regularly, and to exercise, eat regularly, sleep 8 hours every night (sometimes with the help of melatonin), practice deep breathing exercises for stress, keep warm, and even now is looking into some testing for my thyroid.  My blood tests came back just barely normal, so she is having me do a urine test for my thyroid.  This is very rare, and has to be sent to Europe to be tested.  If it comes back that I am having trouble with my thyroid, then she wants me to take selenium for it.  My phenobarbitol dose was 220mg, I am now down to 195mg.  That may not sound like a big change, but for anyone who has taken phenobarbitol will tell you that, there is a big difference in how you feel.

I think the neatest thing this has done for me, is to teach me to listen to my body.  It used to scream at me, and I would ignore the warning signs, and end up having a gran mal seizure.  Now I listen, and take care of it as best as I can.

I have been seizure free for 11 months now.  I am still a little tired, but not near as bad as I was before.  I am not suffering from depression, and do not take anti depressants.  The messages are wonderful, and have also helped me to get rid of a migraine, when I get one.

I have started a support group in Riverton, Utah.  We meet once a month.  We have not had a HUGE turnout, but if I keep having them, then maybe they will start to attract some attention.
